Though Photoshop doesn't directly open InDesign project files, the two programs are closely related. Both are part of Adobe's Creative Suite 6 package, so the programs share common file formats. InDesign exports INDD files as PDFs, which Photoshop opens and imports. You can't use PDFs to edit INDD layers, but Photoshop can edit the overall files with its own tools. Photoshop can annotate an InDesign layout with notes, rotate or crop the document and configure the document's image properties.

The Adobe Creative Suite links all of its products together, making it easy to convert files. To convert a Photoshop PSD file to InDesign's INDD format, you import the image into a new InDesign file. Once you've imported the file into InDesign, the Creative Suite lets you edit the original PSD file in Photoshop and it will automatically update the file in InDesign. Use Photoshop's many image editing features to make dazzling graphics and then import them into InDesign to prepare them for print.
Step 1
Click 'File,' then 'New' and then select 'Document' in Adobe InDesign. Click 'OK.'
Step 2
Click 'File' and then 'Place.' Select your PSD file and click 'OK.' Your PSD file has now been inserted into InDesign.
Click 'File' and then 'Save As.' Choose a location for your file and type in a file name. Click 'Save.' Your document is now saved as an InDesign file.

Converting InDesign documents to grayscale enables you to print a PDF on a monochrome printer or save colored ink when using a color printer. When exporting a PDF from an InDesign project, changing a few output settings reveals options for creating a grayscale document. All text and images lose their color information and take on corresponding shades of gray.
Export a PDF
InDesign documents are stored as INDD files. To convert one to grayscale, you must export it as a PDF. Click “File” and choose “Export PDF,” then name your document and click “Save.” When the Export Adobe PDF window opens, click the “Standard” menu and select “None” -- a PDF standard doesn't allow you to choose a grayscale format. Select the “Output” tab from the sidebar, click the “Color Conversion” menu and choose “Convert to Destination.” This option enables you to convert the document's colors and discard the color values. Click the “Destination” menu and choose a grayscale format, such as “Dot Grain” or “Gray Gamma.” When you click “Export,” the converted grayscale document opens in Adobe Acrobat.

in our office we have multiple users all using different levels of creative suite, they include CS5, CS5.5 and CS6.
Most adobe files seem to work fine when switching between different CS versions, ie. i can open a CS6 PSD fine in CS5. But with indesign files they dont want to open.
I know about saving them as an indesign markup file and reopening them but from a work flow point of view this is quite tedious.
Does any one know of a plugin that i can install on CS5 & CS5.5 that will allow me to work in native CS6 Indesign files ? or a batch converter tool that would allow me to drag a load of CS6 id files and convert them to either CS5 files or indesign markup files ?

InDesign files are very different from their other Adobe brethren. Each version brings key changes in how the page is structured. I'll leave it at that.
Here's a discussion that provides an answer to your question. Essentially, you export to IDML format and hope for the best.

In my experience, the only way to convert CS6 files into forms that can be opened in CS5, is by opening them in CS6 and saving them as CS4 files.
I've also found CS5 files automatically open in CS6, after installing a CS6 trial. Unless a user chooses to save these files as CS4 files, these files will be changed to and saved by default as CS6 files. This effectively forces conversion of CS5 files to CS6 files, so that a CS6 trial user is in the position of needing to purchase CS6 in order to continue working on their CS6 files when the trial expires.
(This probably was an unfortunate marketing move on Adobe's part, because the incompatibility could cause annoyance for trial users who might therefore turn away from purchasing the latest version. I like Adobe products, but considering their high cost they should really include better file compatibility.)

Graphic designers have various professional page layout programs at their disposal, which they use to design brochures, advertisements, fliers and other print materials. Sometimes it is necessary to convert a document prepared in Quark XPress (a QXP file) to Adobe InDesign (an INDD file), such as when the designer no longer uses Quark but needs to access a file created in the QXP format and modify it in InDesign. Adobe recognized the importance of being able to import QXP files into InDesign, so the company has integrated a QXP import feature into InDesign, which will convert QXP files (versions 3.3-4.1x) into INDD files.
Step 1
Create a folder that contains the QXP file and all images that were used in the document so that InDesign can find the files easily during the import. If you have access to Quark, open the file you wish to convert to INDD and make sure that all the graphics and fonts are included and linked properly. If the QXP file that you wish to convert is open in Quark XPress, close it.
Step 2
Launch Adobe InDesign. Go to InDesign's 'File' menu, located at the top of the page, and select 'Open.' A screen will open that allows you to select the file you wish to convert from QXP to INDD. On this screen's 'Files of Type' drop-down menu, select 'Quark XPress (3.3-4.1x).' Choose the file you wish to convert and then select 'Open.'
Step 3
Make any adjustments needed as a result of the conversion. Sometimes text rolls differently or the layout is modified due to differences between QXP and INDD files.
Rebirth rb-338 windows 7 64 bit. By the looks of things you have the usual Realtek gear; make sure you update using drivers from their site rather than relying on Windows Update. The other possible problem is still with your codecs.
Go to InDesign's 'File' menu and select 'Save As' to save the file as an INDD file. During the conversion, InDesign imported the QXP file into an untitled INDD document, so you will need to name the converted file. Navigate to the folder where you intend to store the file and select 'Save.'
