Windows 10 Photos App not working Fix
We have categorized the solution into three stages for the Windows 10 Photos App not working issue. From terminating and restarting the Photos app process, resetting it and to reinstalling the entire Photos app in Windows 10. I categorized them this way so that you donât lose your photos app settings and wonât need to apply extra fixes if a simple process restart could solve your problem.
So, work your way down the list of fixes until you find one that works for you. Hereâs how to fix the Windows 10 Photos app not working, wonât open or crashing problem.
Terminate and restart Photos app
By closing the Photos app, you donât close the Photos appâs background process. Itâs still remain active in your Windows 10 background. To fully restart Photos app, you will have to terminate its background process. Hereâs how to do it.
Go to start menu and click Settings (the gear icon on the left), or by pressing Win+i keys on your keyboard. In the Settings app, select Apps, then Apps & features from the left pane. Scroll down the list of apps until you see Photos app. Select it and click on the Advanced options link.
In the Photos app settings, scroll down and look for Terminate. Click on the Terminate button. Itâs normal the button doesnât turn gray after clicking it. After terminating the process, retry to open the Photos app again and see if it works.
Reset Photos app
If restarting the Photos app background process doesnât work to fix your problem, the next try would be to reset the app. In most cases, this should solve any issue regarding the Windows 10 Photos app.
To reset photos app, go back to the Photos app settings as outlined above â Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Photos app > Advanced options. Scroll down and look for Reset. Click on the Reset button.
Restart your computer and retry opening the Photos app. Verify if your Windows 10 Photos app not working, wonât open or crashing issue is resolved. Otherwise, try the next solution.
Reinstall Windows 10 Photos app
If doing all the above doesnât work to fix your Photos app problem, a reinstall of the app may help solve the issue. There is no exe installer for the Photos app. Weâll have to do it in the Windows PowerShell by executing a few commands.
To reinstall Windows 10 Photos app, go to start menu and search for Windows PowerShell. Right-click it and select Run as administrator. In the Windows PowerShell, enter the following commands.
Look for and copy the entire line of PackageFullName. When you have it copied, enter the following command with the copied Package Full Name.
The package full name shown here is just an example. You may have a different version of the Photos appâs package full name. Be sure to copy your version of it. Entering this command will uninstall the entire Windows 10 Photos app.

If you are having problems launching a Windows 8 App from the Start Screen, we have put together a list of troubleshooting steps you can try. Typically, if you are having this problem, when you double-click on a Windows app Windows will look like its doing something, but the app does not launch. You will not receive any errors or any other alert that indicates why the app has not started. When following the steps below, please do them in the order given.
Reboot your Computer
A closely held secret by many IT professionals is that rebooting Windows is the secret sauce for fixing most computer problems. Simply restart Windows and then try your apps again. If that does not work, then please proceed with the rest of the steps.
Check your Display Resolution
Windows 8 Apps will not run if your display resolution is lower than 1024x768. When your resolution is lower, you will be shown a message stating that your screen resolution is to low for the app to run.
To fix this, simply type Resolution at the Windows 8 Start Screen and then click on the Settings search category. Then click on the Adjust screen resolution option. This will bring you to a screen where you can change the resolution settings for Windows.
Make sure User Account Control is enabled in Windows 8
If User Account Control is disabled in Windows 8 your Windows apps may no longer start. This does not appear to affect everyone, but as it is a security risk to disable User Account Control, you are better off enabling it to be safe.
To enable User Account Control, type User Account Control at the Windows 8 Start Screen and then click on the Settings category. Then click on the Change User Account Control Settings option. A screen will open where you can select the User Account Control level as shown below.
Change the settings so that you it is set to the second from the top as shown in the image above.
Install the latest video drivers
Installing the latest video drivers may not only solve this issue, but will increase the overall performance of your computer. Newer video drivers typically contain enhancements that fix a wide range of issues from game performance to Windows compatibility. To update your video driver, determine what video card you have installed in your computer and then visit that manufacturers web site. From their web site you can then download the latest available drivers for Windows 8.
Switch to a local account
There have been some reports that if you are using a Microsoft account and switch to a local account, you will be able to start the Windows apps again. There is no loss of functionality by switching to a local account and any app that requires your Microsoft account credentials will just request them as needed.
Revert any changes made by 3rd party programs
If you have used a 3rd party program to customize Windows 8, they may have caused Windows Registry corruption or set values that are not valid for Windows. In some cases, there have been reports that these changes could cause Windows apps to no longer start. Therefore, if you have used one of these types of programs, please start them again and revert any changes you made back to the Windows 8 defaults.
Refresh Windows 8
If all else fails, you can try refreshing Windows 8. This will do a complete reinstall of Windows 8 while retaining your data and personal account settings. For more information on how to refresh Windows 8, please see this tutorial:
If you have any questions regarding these steps, please ask us in the Windows 8 Forum.
So you've been up and running on Windows 10, and everything has been going great. Then one day, you suddenly see a list of apps queued up in the Windows Store waiting to update and stuck in the 'pending' state.
Microsoft said this morning that they have fixed the Store issues, although some users are still experiencing them. If you fall into that camp, you will want to read on for a possible fix!
The natural reaction probably is to close and reopen the Store or to reboot your computer when that doesn't work. But if you are like most people who have experienced this issue, you are still stuck with the problem.
Here is a list of steps you can take to get the Store working and your apps downloading again.
Once you've tried restarting your computer (Start > Power > Restart), the next step is to log out of the Windows Store and then log in again with your Microsoft account.
Log off
Reset the Store Cache
If that does not get the Store working again, close out of the app, then try resetting the Store cache:
Troubleshoot Windows Update
If resetting the Store cache doesn't fix it, the next thing to try is troubleshooting Windows Update, which is closely ties to the Windows Store:
Reset Windows Update (Caution)
The final thing that you can do to get the Store working again is to reset Windows Update completely. And before proceeding, you should be warned that messing around with Windows system files can lead to problems, so do this at your own risk:
Windows 10 Wont Load Apps
This final step is the one that ultimately worked for me, but it is a 'nuclear option' and I do not recommend trying it first.
